Plant the Duluth Community Orchard!
Last summer, Duluthian’s rallied to win a 50+ tree heritage apple orchard for their community from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, sponsored by Edy’s Fruit Bars. The UMD Sustainable Agriculture Project is pleased to be the site for this orchard.
Come one, come all to help us plant the orchard! Dress for the weather and plan on a day of fun, workshops, and snacks provide by Eddy’s fruit bars.
When: Saturday, May 12, 8:30am – 2pm
Schedule for the day’s events:
8:30 am: Volunteer orientation
9:00 am: Project overview and Introductions
9:20 am: Ceremonial tree planting and demonstration (Steve O’Neil, St. Louis Commissioner and Lois Mann, daughter of former UMD farm manager!)
9:40: Tree Planting and Edy’s Fruit Bar sampling
Noon-2pm: Tour of the UMD Seedling Trial Orchard and Workshop on Restoring Old Apple Trees.
Where: UMD Field Research Studies Center, 4907 Jean Duluth Road. Planting will be at the SAP Farm site on Riley Road. Directions from UMD…go north on Woodland Ave., turn right on Snively Road, continue onto Jean Duluth Road, turn left on Riley Road (just past the soccer fields), the farm site will be on the left (see attached poster for map).
